Levada Gift Box
illustration, branding, logo, packaging and leaflet design
MoviGo does transportation and local activities on Madeira Island in Portugal.
They wanted to make a gift box available for their clients that they could easily carry on their flight or luggage with six local and very typical products: Madeira Wine, Fennel Candy, Honey Buns, Honey Cake and Banana & Passionfruit Jam. This box should work as a souvenir for the visitors themselves or as a gift for friends.
I was part of the project since the very beginning, designing the format and materials and being in charge of picking a name and a tagline for their product. Unfortunately it never saw the light of day due to production costs.

Madeira, Portugal
It’s an archipelago comprising 4 islands off the northwest coast of Africa. It is known for its amazing year round summer climate, wonderful fauna and flora and delicious exotic fruits.
It’s also known for the Levadas
The “levadas” are channels of water with a gentle slope originally created to transport the water of the north of the Island to the south where the climate is drier, with more population and plantations.
But LEVADA in Portuguese also means “taken”
So I suggested it would be the perfect name for their project: a box with regional products that could be taken as a souvenir or a gift.
Logo Design
Inspired by the lines that limit the Levadas and more specifically the spots where there’s a crossing between two Levadas.
For the color and typefaces
The inspiration was the traditional costume of Madeira. It is not used anymore, only for touristic purposes but I always loved the colours and patterns. For the type I picked fonts with strong characters to make this product really stand out.
And for the graphic environment
The idea was to create a contrast between the very geometric lines from the logo and a background really full in freehand drawing with as much colours as the ones we can find in the beautiful island of Madeira. For that, I took many of the symbols of Madeira and created simple abstract shapes for each of them.
The Background
In freehand drawing style, combining all the elements that characterize so well everything that Madeira is, from the beautiful Santana houses made of wood with reed roofing to the ‘estrelícias’, the flowers you can see all over the place and that became also a symbol of the archipelago.
